Data mining is a field of research of computer science which is concerned with extracting knowledge from data. It is also often called knowledge discovery. In data mining data is analyzed from different perspectives and if possible useful and yet unknown information or knowledge is extracted. The aim of data mining can be to discover previously unknown patterns which are statistically significant and aid in the prediction of classes of unseen examples or to find previously unknown groups within the data. Within this area of research a number of different fields are very actively pursued.
