Research Associate (PhD student or Postdoc)

The Institute of Computer Science, in particular the Data Mining Group headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Kramer, and the Data Center at the Johannes Gutenberg University (JGU) Mainz invite applications for a research associate (either as PhD student or Postdoc) to work at the newly founded Competence Center for HPC in the Natural Sciences funded by the Carl-Zeiss-Foundation. The objective of the new Competence Center is to facilitate the transfer of computer science research into the natural sciences.

You will:
  • Design and optimize scalable data mining algorithms for at least one of the application areas (bioinformatics, physics, meteorology, and geosciences)
  • Implement, expand and maintain user-friendly software
  • Work in close collaboration with other project partners
  • Write and publish scientific papers
Skills:
Essential:
  • Very good degree (PhD. or M.Sc.) in Computer Science or a closely related area
  • Excellent skills in data mining
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills
  • Ability to work in a small group
  • General programming skills in at least one of the following programming languages: C, C++, Java, R, Python
  • Excellent mathematical and implementation skills
  • Creativity and problem solving abilities
Desirable:
  • Experience in benchmarking and optimization on large compute clusters
  • Experience in hardware accelerators (e.g. GPUs and CUDA)
  • Experience in visual analytics or optimization
  • Programming skills in C/C++
  • Knowledge of algorithm design techniques
