News and events in Q4/2024

Current activities:

  • We welcome Son Ha, who joined the Data Mining group as a postdoctoral researcher at the beginning of November.

Current Publications and Presentations:

  • Several of our group members participated in Discovery Science 2024, held from October 14-16, 2024, in Pisa, Italy:
    • Kirsten Köbschall presented Soft Hoeffding Tree: A Transparent and Differentiable Model on Data Streams, a joint work with Lisa Hartung and Stefan Kramer.
    • Mattia Cerrato presented Science-Gym: A Simple Testbed for AI-driven Scientific Discovery, a joint work with Nicholas Schmitt, Lennart Baur, Edward Finkelstein, Selina Jukic, Lars Münzel, Felix Peter Paul, Pascal Pfannes, Benedikt Rohr, Julius Schellenberg, Philipp Wolf, and Stefan Kramer.
    • Jannis Brugger presented Residuals for Equation Discovery, a joint work with Viktor Pfanschilling, Mira Mezini, and Stefan Kramer.
  • Our paper Harder to mend than to break? - Counterfactual explainable artificial intelligence for lifestyle medicine and heart disease prediction, a joint work of Hakan Lane, Michael Vaľko, Shree Rath, Mark Walker, Matthew Olson, and Stefan Kramer, has been accepted at the Journal of Medical Artificial Intelligence Vol 8 (March 30, 2025).
  • The Süddeutsche Zeitung mentioned Prof. Stefan Kramer in an article entitled "Gemeinsam voran – Technologiestandorte rücken enger zusammen." Read the full article here.
  • The AAAI Fall Symposium, held from 7th to 9th November, focused on Integrated Approaches to Scientific Discovery. The event was very successful, with contributions including three talks: two given by Jannis Brugger and one presented by Prof. Stefan Kramer.
  • An article featuring a statement from Prof. Stefan Kramer, entitled „Nobelpreis für die Wegbereiter der KI: Was bedeutet das für Wissenschaft und Gesellschaft“, was published by the Plattform Lernende Systeme.

Recent Events:

  • From 14th to 15th November, the 10th annual IPP retreat was held in Osthofen, Mainz. Members gathered to discuss research ideas, future collaborations, and the direction of the IPP.
  • The BioVation RLP Event, held on 21st November in Mainz, emphasized the potential of technological clusters in Rheinland-Pfalz. Key highlights included:
    • A presentation of the curATime cluster.
    • A workshop entitled "KI in Life Sciences: Potenziale und Herausforderungen," led by Markus Junker (DFKI).
    • A keynote speech by Prof. Stefan Kramer, entitled "KI und Life Science in Rheinland-Pfalz.".
  • On 26th November, the Zukunftsunternehmen 2024 Award Ceremony was held at the Staatskanzlei Mainz to honor innovative companies shaping the future of Rhineland-Palatinate. The event featured a keynote by Prof. Stefan Kramer on "KI und Nachhaltigkeit an der Schwelle zum Jahr 2025." Learn more here.
  • The TopML Outreach Event was held on 28th November to promote the TOPML project and its objectives to a broader audience.

Upcoming Events:

  • We contributed Challenge 4: Intercellular Communication in Cardiovascular Disease to the curATime (Bio-) Hackathon “curAHack” 2025, held from March 31 to April 2, 2025, at the Gutenberg Digital Hub in Mainz. Please register online to solve our challenge: curATime - curAHack March/April 2025.
